Mural for Taiwan (detail)
© 2000, Michael O'Rourke

Near the center of the mural, a drawing of an angel by Leonardo da Vinci. This drawing was a study for Leonardo's painting, The Annunciation. In the final painting, the angel points with a very distinct gesture toward its right (our screen left). In the context of the mural, the angel would be pointing directly toward the little girl in the left half of the mural. The inclusion of the Western master, Leonardo, reflects the inclusion of a painting fragment by a Chinese master, Fan Kuan.
