New York #2
Multimedia mural . 7' x 16' (2m x 4.6m)

The mural attempts to capture the diversity and tumult of humanity, along with our quieter moments, our longings, our aspirations. The recurring rectangles of imagery echo the rectangular windows of our current visual culture - video screens, film screens, the floating windows of our computer screens - as well as the history of more traditional image-making - painting, printing, drawing. Embedded within the mural is a video screen displaying real-time, processed imagery of the passersby and viewers. In another section of the mural, we hear the faint sounds of overlapping human voices. As we listen more closely, we realize that the voices are speaking poetry, each in a different language.
The mural is fabricated of lightweight materials that can easily be transported and installed for temporary exhibition. Click for an installation view., for fabrication and AV details, or for credits.
This mural was derived from an earlier composition, Mural for New York, Another variation, entitled New York #3, was later developed as a limited-edition print on paper.
